OK, this is a layperson's question (I'm a psychologist). After reading "The Life of the Cosmos," I was left with one question: if black holes create universes, where does the mass come from? Presumably, if our universe started in a black hole, that black hole did not have the total mass that our universe has now?
I would appreciate any insight into this question.

I believe that energy in itself can at times create matter, small amounts of matter. then if conditions are right chain reaction occurs and more matter is created. black holes are enormous energy vacuums. it is possible when all matter is stripped down inside a blackhole only pure energy remains, and when that energy breaches the other side of a blackhole the theory of inflation occurs. something from nothing or so it seems.
