We have very little time to introduce order into the present disorder of international affairs but we are currently being pushed by events which can be listed as:
[1] The menace of international terrorist attacks.
[2] The danger of further pre-emptive strikes like the one on Iraq.
[3] The collapse of the banking system and ensuing global recession.
[4] A series of extreme climatic events (the most recent being flooding in Pakistan) which strain aid sources to their utmost.
[5] Escalating population growth which has to be curbed.
[6] A growing gap between rich and poor fuelling social upheaval and emigration.
At such a time, endless diplomatic negotiating is a luxury we cannot afford.
What would be an enormous stride in the right direction would be the abolition of war. 'Defence' spending currently absorbs vast sums of cash and resources which obviously could and should be devoted to dealing with the pressing problems listed above. It would be maniacal to act destructively rather than constructively at such a time = fiddling while Rome burns with a vengeance.
We already have a UN Peacekeeping Force spread thinly and somewhat ineffectively across the globe. Instead of this, we should urge the UN to set up a global authority with complete control of all the world's military personnel and hardware. 'Defence' and 'Security' would not be within the province of sovereign states but would be the sole responsibility of the international community operating through this global authority. The international force so controlled would be responsible for maintaining peace, removing all illicitly held arms, monitoring all areas to prevent evasion. It would also be checked by an independent watchdog to ensure that it did not act corruptly or abuse its power or overstep its function.
Having achieved this, we could go on to establish a world government to act in all matters which cannot adequately be dealt with at a national or regional level.
