Society is a collection of individuals who make decisions based on their own interests. The idea that all of the world's people will make sacrifices in their lives to solve a problem that will most likely never directly affect them is naive.

It's time we accepted that fact that the Earth's climate will rise sharply in the near future. We should focus on trying to develop strategies and technologies that will mitigate the problems caused by global warming - rather than trying to prevent it.

Global warming is a natural process and man's activities have led to an increase in the greenhouse gases. It is not something that we can stop but we can sure make a difference by changing our lifestyle and attitude towards the environment. We can help by conserving water at home by turning off the faucet when we brush our teeth, taking shorter showers, installing a smart sprinkler controller, and washing only full loads of laundry among others. http://j.mp/1CTCBx will gibe you simple water-saving tips!

To gain hope, do something about it. Get your friends to help to, it is scary but if we all help we can stop it...or at least decline the rate.

Global Warming is just as serious for our life on earth as it would a major meteor hitting the planet in 50 years time. Would your priority be to focus on trying to develop strategies to mitigate the effects of a meteor impact or would you try to avoid the impact in the first place? It is true, society is a collection of individuals pursuing their own interest, but they live obeying rules and law stablished by society as a whole, and the sacrifices to avoid catastrophic climate changes will have to be enforced for all individuals and businesses by law, just as any law does. This is already starting to happen on most industrialized countries, who knowing the burden that it adds on their economies, and the importance of doing the correct thing now, signed the Kioto protocol.

Sadly our education system makes academics and their students think they have all the answers. As Einstein said, 'insanity is when we keep repeating the same methods that have not worked, but expect a better outcome'. Remarkably we can grow trees in desert environments - if we are prepared to accept unconventional methods - that have now been demonstrated to work incredibly well on highly impoverished and degraded soil in low rainfall districts. How does one the 'experts' to look at and adopt these methodologies?

I think your bleak assessment might have merit if we lived in society without laws and goverment.

It is the role of goverment to change the direction of society when the collective interests of its citizens move it in a dangerous direction.

We are headed for a future (for better or worse) in which consumption sacrafices are not made voluntarily by citizens - but are imposed by our leaders.
