By MY understanding of string theory, this happened because the neutrinos had less resistance in space occupied by matter than empty space. Matter OCCUPIES space, because it is made of strings that coil around the fabric of space itself. By coiling around space itself, the strings reduce or even eliminate the "quantum froth" that occurs at or below the Planck Length. This is what gives matter it's solidity and prevents objects from passing through one another. In this case, the matter and associated gravity smoothed space to the point that the neutrinos had less resistance, and could travel without having a "pinball path" through the "quantum froth."

Please help me understand this more. I am familiar with the terms you used but not familiar with the outcome. I don't disagree with you necessarily but I would like to hear more about this, especially Planck time, and Planck distance. I'm particulately interested in c as it relates to Planck time and distance. I'm an amateur but I think I can follow you if you reply keeping in mind my lack of formal education in physics.
