I was pleased to find this website, as I think Joe Orlando is one of the greats to ever illustrate comics, and is possibly the most underrated comic artist of all time. When ever I would read a story drawn by him, my frist impression is not, "this is great art." but "this is a great story." His art helped to tell the story first. I remember buying a couple of paperbacks reprinting EC comics when I was in high school. They were "Tales of the Incredible." and Autumn People." Both reprinted stories from EC comics. Incredible Tales included two stories drawn by Orlando, Judgement Day and Chewed Out. I was particularly impressed by Judgement Day. It was an eloquent plea for racial equality that remains relivant today. Autumn People had the adaptation of Bradbury's The Lake. It blew me away. Some have criticized Orlando for not being faithful to bradbury's text, but he did such a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of Bradbury's tale. The reader sees through the art the pure young love of the protagonist and his girl friend, Tally. Orlando allows you to feel his pain when Tally dies. And Orlando's art helps show that the pain is still there when the protagonist is an adult and married. It was a great introduction to a great stroyteller/artist. Since then I have read many stories drawn by Orlando, and have never been disappointed by any of them.
