My husband has chronic sciatica after a spinal tumour. he is on 175mcg fentayl patches every 72 hours. he has been prescribed nabilone .. 1mg every night.. my questions are ..do these two interact well ? how long does nabilone take to work ? does the tired side effect wear off eventually ? is there any way the nabilone could make the pain worse if it doesn't suit him ... here's hoping .. jill

Hi Jill, i was just wondering how your husdand is doing? I too am on fentanyl patches and trying desperately to get off them. I have just been prescribed naboline and was wondering ho9w it interacts with fentanyl. I have been prescribed 3 times the amount of naboline but am on a third the amount fentanyl. In an attempt to give me chronic bowel pain relief, which like your husdband gives me a constant chronic pain, 24 hours.

Would be interested to see how your man is getting oin with it.

Does anyone use naboline for pain releif alone?

Matt

Hi Matt, Was really surprised to get a reply. So sorry to hear about your problem. The nabilone wasn't good for him at all and he came off it after 10days. THE PAIN WAS WORSE THAN EVER. Although the pain clinic said there's no way it could be !! It got to such a stage I went onto Net doctor.com and a neurologist from the states replied and said in some cases nabilone,if taken for nerve pain can make nerves 'over exciteable' and can make pain worse , which is what he has ie, sciatica. So he came off them and was put onto an anti depressant which also acts as pain killer called Nortriptyline , and at the moment (i'm touching wood ) , it appears to be helping. The nabilone he was given was purely for pain relief..I looked it up , which I'm sure you have and it does have some good results with some people..the other side effect it had was after about 5 days it knocked him out .. that was only on 1mg.. everything I've read says it interacts well with fentanyl...and yes, getting off fentnyl..thats a whole new ball game eh ??
Let me know how you get on with it , I'll keep my fingers crossed it works for you..
Take care....Jill X

Hi Jill, Many thanks for your reply, although i am a bit weary of taking the nabilone now, especailly as the reason i have been put on them (although my prescription has been put in i now have to wait until monday to get them), is to try and get me off the fentanyl! And the reason for that is that it has taken my mojo away, i have no energy and can sleep until 1pm even if i go to bed at 7pm the following evening. Which is not practical as i have to work, luckily i am a partner in a small company and the other partner is understanding, but is getting a little annoyed with the whole thing as its been going on for 18 months now.

I also tried an anti depressant called amyltriptyline, but this again just made me sleep all day. And as i stated to the doc, i would reather be in pain and have some form of life than not be in pain because i am asleep and have no life. I also have 2 daughters aged, 4 and 7, who i need to look after, again my partner is very accomodating in helping with this (as she is not the mother), BUT ALL I WANT IS A PAIN FREE LIFE WITH THE ENERGY LEVELS I USED TO HAVE. And be able to get up before midday without trying to walk through porridge.

Its a shame that it didnt help your hubby, i really do hope that the other meds will help him. Let me know how he gets on with the Nortiptyline, i would be interested if this makes him tired or sleepy.

I will let you know how i get on, until then all the best to you both. Matt.

Hi again ! ..Just to add he took amitriptyline with the same effect .. he was flaked out from morning til night and like you say .. it's no life..This one, NORTRIPTYLINE doesn't have that effect at all . if anything its kind of the opposite.. he's been on a bit of a high for the two weeks he's been on it . now wether that's because a lot of the pain is finally under control or its the anti depressant side of things i don't know but it certanly seems to be working for him . they are the same family of drugs apparently. If your problem is nerve related maybe worth a try on these before nabilone ?? I would imagine the consultant might be up for it as the nabilone tablets for a month were about £240 if we'd had to pay for them ! Your partner sounds one in a million .. it's hard for all of us , you two living with the pain and us watching you and being helpless..anyway, keep in touch, speak soon ...x
