My daughter and I were viewing the ceiling ornamentation in the church, San Pietro in Montorio, in Rome, and we had a debate about whether the motifs and the shadows they cast were simply painted, as in a fresco, or sculpted in 3-D relief as in a frieze. Does anyone besides the church maintenance crew have an answer to this question?
