Carroll Shelby

My brother got this amazing russian desktop set with marble and a Romanov Russian lion on top. Obviously 100+ years old. Story goes Shelby got it as a gift and then gave it to Carle Wunderlich (of Alden catalog fame). Anyone know of any Shelby relation to Russia? I do remember some story of him racing there once...or some other russian connection
