My Great Grandfather was a RSM in the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Regiment of foot (the Buffs). He spent +-25 years in the regiment, having been recruted in Belfast around about 1856 and being sent straight to the Crimea, he learnt to shot, so the story is told, on the troop ship taking him and his brother there. He saw action, watched the light brigade charge and his brother who joined up with him was killed at the defence of Sebastion. He then went to India, he was on the Pekin experdition and eventually to South Africa, he was with the column that moved up the coast and was wounded whilst riding by a zulu assagi.Invalided back to Aldershot he spent the rest of his time in the army there. This story has come to me in bits and pieces, I would like to find out more about him, how do I go about this?
