My G. Grandma, Eunice Armstrong Wood, used to bake a cake known as a Quizzet. When I last lived in Aiken I discovered that it was invented about 100 years ago in Warrenvile. When we were kids she used to bake it and send it up to NY. I am in the Philippines and wondering if anyone would have the recipe.

I copied this version of the Quizzet Cake from my grandmother, Lillie Mae Pope Stiefel from Warrenville, SC. I grew up in the Aiken area also but am now in Delaware. I don't know the story of the cake. Quite surprised to see this posting when I Googled the words "Quizzet Cake"! This is my brother's favorite cake.

Here goes: CAKE
Cream together: 1/2 cup butter and 1 cup sugar. Add one at at time: 3 eggs. Mix together: 3 tbsp sugar, 5 tsp cocoa and 1/2 cup hot water. Add alternately: 1 cup milk (if using evaporated milk mix 1/2 milk and 1/2 water), 2 cups self-rising flour and cocoa mixture. The batter will be thin. Grease and flour 8 layer pans. Put 3 tbsp batter in each pan and divide the remaining batter among the pans. Bake at 450 degrees about 5 minutes. FILLING/FROSTING: 3 cups sugar and 2 cups evaporated milk (no water). Cook in large saucepan on stovetop for a few minutes stirring often then add a large lump of butter (about the size of large walnut)-I used about 3 tbsp of butter. Cook until when dropped in water will form a soft ball. It's real easy to scorch, but will be okay. Stir real well. I cooked mine about 1 hour on a slow rolling boil. It never did form a ball but was chewy when the water was poured off. Just ice tops of layers.

The icing is the tricky part! It is a very delicious cake. Enjoy!

Thank you so much! I am also quite surprised to see someone who knows about it. Now I have to get up the courage to try to bake it.
