My Father Douglas was in the Green Howards during WW2.
He told me a story about how he enabled the surrender of the Africa Korps in Cairo in 1942.Apparently General von Thoma had taken over from Rommel(sent back to defend French coast)My father as the designated driver was told to get von Thoma to see the Sphinx.It was the genaral's condition that before he signed the surrender he had to see the Sphinx.My father job was to take him.One problem was that my father hasd no idea where the Sphinx was.This he overcame hence HIS responsibility for the Africa Korps surrender.Can anyone confirm?
