The book "Married to Islam" gives me a whole new understanding about Islam and marriage.
The Islamic wife, of whom this book is her story, asserts:
--Mohammed (s) was actually progressive regarding women.
--The Marriage Contract can save wives much trouble should the marriage falter. (She tells how this works)
--Except in a case where a husband actually catches his wife committing adultery the Koran never says a husband is correct to strike his wife.
--and much more.

If this book is accurate, Islam has really gotten off course in many countries around the world.

I haven't read the book so i cannot make any comment on it.
but i want to say something. equality and justice are two different concepts. however most of the time people are trying to use them as if they are synonyms.
men and women are not equal but there must be justice between them. islamic rules are constructing the desired moderate model of social life.
but today some of these rules are abused by some ignorant male characters in most of the islamic countries. men always have the capacity of doing this!!! regardless of their nation, religion or social position. they misuse the priorities their relion and so their society bestowed them. morever some of these even claim that they fulfill all these torturing acts in the name of Allah. Therefore, just because of this kind of ignorant men, people have certain prejudices against islam.
especially today, while islamophobia is rising rapidly, such additions sounds terrible.
on the other hand, there are of course men and women who are afraid of Allah and who know his/her rights and duties well. the relationships between such people are always sound.
in islam every rule has a reason and function considering the benefits of people.
