I have read recently a book titled "Smyrna 1922 The Destruction Of A City"

The book discussed the destruction of the city by the Turks after the retreat of the Greek army. The Turks raped, murdered, pillaged and burnt the city to the ground. All along due to the orders and authority of Admiral Bristol 10's of 1000's of Armenians, Greeks and others lost their lives. He forbade journalist from reporting the truths of the events occurring and made the people who committed the atrocities out to be civil and well disciplined and did nothing bad once entering the city. Due to his influence over the U.S military in the region he was able to have orders placed to forbid the U.S ships in Smyrna harbor from saving refugees who were fleeing the fore mentioned atrocities.

His actions were due not to the Greek or the Armenians being bad or such but due to corporate greed! Even though the Greeks were allies with the U.S, Brits and French during WWI against the Axis powers they were betrayed. This was because the powers at hand were afraid of Greek expansion over predominantly Greek areas in Anatolia (Modern Turkey). The powers felt they were all going to lose the rights to the natural resources and trade in Anatolia if this occurred. So to counter this they all sucked up to the Turks (who just 4 years earlier had committed ethnic cleansing against the Armenians killing approximately 1.5 million of them). The same thing would happen to the Greeks of the Pontian coast (Black Sea coast of Turkey) where up to 600,000 were murdered. The same would happen to the Greeks and Armenians who lived and predominated Smyrna in 1922.

This admiral allowed this to occur due to not wanting to lose future profits to the other powers. To this day the man is still honored as a great admiral of the U.S and starting a nursing school in, then, Constantinople, now, Istanbul. This supposed humanitarian appears to be a total and complete hypocrite. On one hand he created a school of nursing to SAVE lives but on the other hand hey aided in the deaths of more people than all the nurses ever trained in that school have ever saved.

I feel this should be made public and this man who has been honored and even had two ships named after should be shown for what he really was and not the fake cover in which he is portrayed.
