The mythology of the American West has made the frontier lynching seem like a part of a primitive justice system, when in fact it often occurred on the frontier for the same racist, greedy and bigoted reasons that spurred it on in the South.

Between 1848 and 1860, 163 Mexicans were lynched in California. These lynchings occurred because the Mexicans were successful gold miners and white prospectors became jealous.
