Look back into the oldest 'fossil light' to witness where possible the origins of the 'big bang' seems interesting enough; except that all that light and energy of the big bang shot past where we are in space, even before the earlist embrotic matter of our early universe arrived here and let alone the billons of years of earths history and the evolution of life to the enquiring minds. Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing the expansion of the universe. That is the expansion of spacetime. Our galaxy is not standing still, but is moving as spacetime expands. Therefore it takes light a while to "catch up" with us.
