The Orteig prize was a $25,000 purse offered by hotelier Raymond Orteig to the first pilot to fly nonstop from Paris to New York. Lindbergh began his winning attempt on 20 May 1927.

When Lindberg arrived the French Foreign Office honored him by flying the American flag. They had never done this for someone who wasn't a head of state.
