Lee was put in command of all of Virginia's forces at the outbreak of the war, and named one of the Confederate States Army's generals when it was created.
Newspaper editorials of the day protested when Lee was appointed commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. The public believed that Lee was not aggressive enough on the battlefield.
