Hello,

there are two types of jihad (struggle):
1) the lower jihad
2) the greater jihad

- the lower jihad is the struggle one takes to protect the civil rights and property of the society one lives in.
- the greater jihad (inner struggle or struggle against self), it is the struggle one engages in on daily basis to fight against one's self desires (eg. selfishness, greed, miserliness, etc. ). This jihad is more important becauses society is made up of individuals and if those individuals stuggle to better themselves the society will automatically become heathier. there can be no healthy society without well-balanced, healthy individuals.
Like our body needs food in order to function properly, our soul needs spiritual links to its creator (through prayers, supplictions, good deeds, etc. )
The month of ramadhan is the month were one trains oneself to optimum inner jihad, optimum feeding of the soul and optimum regeneration of the body:
1) by giving up food, drink, lawful , conjugal relations, etc. to lift spirit, lose excess body weight, thus increasing both mental and physical alertness. Overeating after the breaking of the fast defeats the purpose and is harmful.
2) by making up with family, friends, etc, to bring peace and strengthening social relations. .
3) by redistrubuting wealth in society through the payment of zakat, called the right of the poor.
4)the sensation of hunger and thurst create unique juices in stomach that cleanses it from microscopic food particles. fasting regenerates the body cells.
unfortunately some of the media and ignorant ill-intentioned individuals have distorted the concept of jihad and given it an evil face like other lofty teachings of islam. it is their loss. This life is but a short journey towards eternal life where man created imbalances (eg. globla warming) and injustices will be redressed.

STRIVING: Wa Jahadu ...and 'strive' Jihad form johd : to strive against evil, inner, outer, personaly, for community etc.

22:78 And strive in His cause as ye ought to strive, (with sincerity and under discipline). He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the cult of your father Abraham. It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Apostle may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to God! He is your Protector - the Best to protect and the Best to help
