Kennedy was injured when his boat the PT-109 was rammed by a Japanese vessel. Nevertheless he heroically rescued a wounded man.

He himself had been seriously injured when he selflessly performed this heroic rescue. He suffered back problems for the rest of his life. One of the reasons he favored a rocking chair is that it helped to relieve his chronic back pain.
