It has been suggested that one of the secrets of Hannibal's success was that his soldiers were encouraged to have gay relationships. The reasoning was that soldiers with carnal relations fought harder to protect each other. Is any of this true?

The ancient Greeks and Romans often practiced homosexuality. The Carthaginians were said by Roman historians to look upon this with great disdain. Romans would point out that the Carthaginians frowned upon this, yet they performed human sacrifice during times of extreme duress. I have never heard of this suggestion that you speek of in all my years of reading about both Hannibal and Carthage. I am sure that there could have been such occurances just as there is today, however, I have never heard of this before and it was probably isolated.
