I agree absolutely. The universe is vast, and no one has proved that the accident that produced life was exclusive to this planet. It might be unlikely that a similar planet has produced life, but it could never be impossible. There is also the possibility that intellligent life does not even need the conditions found on Earth. Life here is water based, but any dense gas, for instance methane, could also be a birth medium for life.
In many places in the universe stars are older than ours and life has had longer to develop. Hence I think that it is more likely than not, that aliens are observing us at this moment, but we would know nothing about it because they would be invisible and undetectable by any of our means.
Young planets with developing civilisations like ours are indeed rare, and so advanced life forms would have enough interest in us to protect us from less advanced life forms that might be detectable. That would be why we do not come across aliens.
I did once see what might have been an observation ship that had developed a fault and become partially visible. Repairs were quickly made, and it disappeared again.

You can't prove there isn't but you can't prove there is. The Drake Equation KINDA proves it, but its just a theory; granted, MOST theory's with scientific backing are pretty much true...but until we can have physical evidence of life we cannot say 'yes'

Yes it is there,
truth is not only we belive and see,
there are thing beyond our imagination and wisdom.
according to jainology, jainism there is one planet known as mahavidheya ksetra is there the humans live there are basicaly honest innocent and god loving people.
if we stard downloading all possible ways the goodthings in the universe begin with mercy and love on living things if just live and let live others you will realize it the earth made for all creatures and all of them want to live without threatens.
once you deceide not to harm anybody on the earth by soul, words and or action and start forgiving you opened the doors to become yourself god,

Replied to:  What if we are just an accident? A unique accident?
A unique accident sounds tempting, but the history of life on Earth is just too complex and too intricate to simply be an "accident." The way different species have evolved, even the number of different living creatures on this planet is just too great to be an accident. The universe is just too big for us to be the only life. We are but one planet among billions of billions of planets out there in our infinitely expanding universe. The numbers are simply too great...

The main problem with this is simple. We are only allowed a very limited view of our universe. Most of our universe is too far from us to get an accurate view of what we think we are looking at. It's like this: one lightyear is equal to 5.9 billion miles. As it's name suggests, a lightyear is the distance light will travel in one year's time. That means that for every lightyear of distance an object is from us, it's light is delayed one year. So if we are looking at something that is 500 million lightyears away, what we are seeing is really 500 million years old. With this in mind, what if some life form was looking at Earth 500 million years ago? They wouldn't see any life, or think for any reason that there was life here. The Earth would't even be recognizeable at that point in history. Easily, you can see how we are not getting an accurate enough view of these distant planets to know wether or not there is life.

Space goes on infinite so there is a 100% chance there are infinite planets that are the same as ours. a 100% chance there is people or "aliens" doing what we are doing now. and other species that have far greater knowledge. it goes on forever so therefore everything has to be true and there has to be infinite species and living organisms!!

I think before we are able to discuss the life outside the earth, we have to know what we understand under the word life. Till now we have problems to give a definition of the life itself. As long as we are not able to do this we will have large problems to find life.
Is a chemical reaction life or not? The work in our cells are more or less chemical reactions.
I am sure we will fine life outside the earth, if our idea of live is not to high.
Only one will be sure, such creatures as we see in movies like star wars or others didn´t exist anywhere.

The universe is not infinite. It began 13.7 Billion years ago and is expanding. Also it is only a theory (one of many) that there are an infinite number of universes. It is by no means a certainty that life exists elsewhere. If I had to choose I would however agree that we are not alone.

Sure. there are unlimited planets in the universe with life.
What is the reason we humans don't know about their existance is because they are so far away from us and no chance of conflict or war with us, as our human civilization progressing with wars and dominence. So think about it God or super nature keeping us away from bigger cosmic wars.

Is there life on other planets?

I would ask, at this point in our civilization, does it really matter? I mean, humanity can barely stand itself. We are still terrified of anything different from ourselves. Our basic nature is phobic...I'm not talking about individuals, I think one on one, with careful education, anyone can get over their fear of anything, but as a species?
We group together against what we fear and then chatter like a pack of baboons when the object of that fear comes anywhere near us and send our big strong males out to bash the crap out of whatever it is. If what we are afraid of resists being bashed, we rally larger and larger groups swinging ever bigger and better sticks until some one either says...hold up, we don't want to destroy EVERYTHING on the planet or 'WE WON!'
I'd love to imagine that there is life out there, some where and I think finding evidence of some primitive life form would be interesting and great for us as a species. It would take away the fear of being totally alone and give us the possibility of maybe, someday, meeting some one like ourselves to swap stories with but, given our fearful nature, if there is intelligent life out there and they know about us, I'd bet they're not eager to reveal their existence. If they did we would undoubtedly start throwing rocks at them at some point.

If I say, "NO, there's no life out there anywhere", who can prove me wrong? Until we find other life elsewhere, we can't say it exists only that it might be. It might not be either.

As to intelligent life, what's that? If you think about the exceptionally good luck we had in the particular circumstances the Earth went through to foster our development, the chances become very slim. The moon was one of those circumstances. It made the tides happen encouraging life to leave the oceans. If that had not been there it might easily have trippled the time needed. The exact amount of water to make the oceans and leave some land was also critical. Add just a couple of extra percent and only the tallest mountains would be visiable. We would still be jellyfish. The exact distance from the sun is also critical, Venus shows us what would have happened if we had been that bit closer. Just a little bit further away and we have a permanent ice age. The length of a day is also critical.

We are now looking at chances comparable with the number of stars in our galaxy in the other direction. I have not mentioned other possibilities like the exact size rock necessary to extinct the dinosaurs at the exact right time. They had to die for us to come along.

Simply, we are very lucky to be here. I think we should celebrate that instead of looking at places we will never get for things we might never find for something which will make little difference even if we find it.

I was assuming an intelligence comparable to our own otherwise what would be the point.
Yes, there are some very long odds against life forming and even longer, perhaps impossible odds against intelligence anywhere else, certainly anywhere close enough for us to find it but, as people are always pointing out, its a very big universe.

In defense of the possibility I would like to point out that once life takes hold somewhere, it is very tenacious. You pointed to the K/T extinction, I point to the Permian which was something like 70% of ocean species and almost all land animals and that allowed the mammal like lizards to rise yada yada yada. Yet, despite an almost empty world, life survived.

Indeed the odds against homo sapiens were very long but whose to say some other intelligence wouldn't have blossomed instead of us? After all, there have been many species of predators which are typically smarter than herbivores and seem more likely to develop complex social structures, a theoretical basis for evolved intelligence.

If the dinosaurs hadn't fallen to extinction and made way for the rise of mammals, what's to say one of those species wouldn't be "the brains" on this planet? There were plenty of medium sized pack hunters, the best size for a species being forced to develop strategies for survival, avoiding the larger predators, hunting everything else.

My point is that, yes the odds are long, yes conditions to spark life seem specific and terribly fragile. It probably doesn't happen very often and when it does, that life probably doesn't evolve much beyond 'jellyfish' in most places but in those oh so rare instances where everything comes together and complex life emerges...I would almost guarantee some kind of intelligence.

Finding it is another story and I think it unlikely we will.

thanks

I do have a spelling checker but don't use or need it, although some Americans might disagree. (I use English spelling.)

Has no one heard of the terms "grammar" or "sentence"?

When words are strung together with no apparent end of one thought and start of another, it is ambiguous, hard to read and, in most cases, not worth reading.

Many posts I see here are increasing the chances there must be life in the universe more intelligent than humans. Humans are looking dumber and dumber. The qualifications of a microbe somewhere on another planet in another galaxy won't have to be very high.

I will help pay for that party.

The immediate answer is we do not know but see the Hubble video

http://www.flixxy.com/hubble-ultra-deep-field-3d.htm

which gives an estimate of over 100 billion galaxies in the universe.

That makes maybe 1000 billion planets.

How many is 100 billion -well 100 billion seconds is about 3200 years.
1000 billion about 32000 years

I think the odds are pretty high that there is life in other places

If you are betting against life elsewhere it is like betting to win the lottery 50 times in a row.

Funny, I can't ever remember not admitting there might be life elsewhere. There might indeed but that is not proof or verification that there is.

As to statistics, if you are referring to the numbers Governments put out, I don't believe any of them but they are not really statistics. Probability and statistics is a mathematical discipline just like algebra, arithmetic and the calculus. It can be used as a solution to many problems and used to explain many sorts of observations but that's a bit off topic.

When I was referring to sentences, spelling and grammar, I wasn't referring to any individual so if I offended anyone in particular I'm sorry. Just about every forum on every website has few examples of people knowledgeable and diligent in this area. (Glad you are using a spell checker lehmann520. Your posts are a lot easier to read. It will stand you in good stead for the future. You are wise at least.)

Even though astronomers say they have discovered hundreds of planets, they do this only from clues. The hubble telescope can detect wobbles in distant stars they believe are caused by the gravitational drag of planets in their orbits. The size and duration of the wobble tells them how big the planet is and how far away from the star. Nobody, not even with the Hubble telescope, has actually seen a planet outside our own solar system.
