Most historical accounts depict the participation of native peoples as if they are brute antagonists with no motivation than a general desire to murder whites. Native warriors are pressed into a flat backdrop where Anglo efforts stand out in heroic relief.

The reality was probably different. The Wyandot people had in their history experienced near decimation by the Iroquois. Wyandot leadership expressed concern for Christianized Indians in the Ohio Valley who were acclimatizing to the dominant culture. Likely in congruence with British desires, the Wyandot took unilateral action to bring those converted by Moravians into native villages, ostensibly for to protect this intertribal group. The Battle of Little Mountain occurred just weeks following the Gnadenhutten Massacre, when Pennsylvania Militia slaughtered converts who had filtered back to their village to harvest.
