Is the length of the intercept distance a true measure of the accuracy of a given sextant observation? Dutton's uses intercepts in the twenty mile range in examples but I have read blogs that suggest that there is a direct correlation between shorter intercepts and accuracy and intercepts of more than a few miles are supect. Is this true?

I believe the length of the intercept is to a certain extent dependent on the accuracy of your sextant observation, but more dependent on the nearness of your AP, or assumed position. If you AP is 50 miles away, it would make sense that the intercept distance would be 50 miles, too.

Using 229, you use an AP, using 211 you use DR. I not sure what to use with 249, but I know folks who that is all they know/use.
