I am sure that most people who have been posessed are unaware of it.
Demons will not leave on their own, and have to be made to leave.
It is highly likely that a person who is experiencing this had prior spiritual encounters, has opened up to a spiritual realm either knowingly or unknowingly/ talking with a medium or ouija board and or some type of drug.

I'm sure it is possible to know your possessed.
But unlike TV shows and fictional story books you can be possessed by a Angel and well as a Deamon (the correct spelling). But THey can only possess you if you give you consent. Otherwise they can only influence you through thoughts and by taking over other people.
You can use artifacts like Ouija boards, mirrors, mediums to contact demons and angels but those things are not the main reason daemons are able to possess people. Usually there are predestined and the people are possessed because of how they are and other factors that make them ideal for each daemon.
For instance Lucifer can only possess people who are rebellious and are truly evil even if they try or do good things to make them seem good. And Gabriel can only possess people who are god in heart and pure of corruption.
