A lightweight boat that is constructed with the sides and bow, made of flexible tubes, consisting of pressurized gas, that is the definition of this extremely versatile and vastly used craft in everyday sea life. Naval bases, Sea Rescue as well as Deep Sea Divers use these Inflatable boats, also, more commonly known as Rubber Ducks or Inflatable Dinghies.
Some Inflatable boats have been designed to be disassembled and packed into a small volume, so they can be easily stored and transported to water when needed. This allows these boats to be used as life rafts for larger boats or air crafts as well as for recreational purposes.
The modern rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) is a development of the inflatable boat which has a rigid floor and solid hull. The external shape of the hull lets it cut through waves more easily giving a more comfortable ride when travelling fast in rough conditions. The structure of the hull is capable of supporting a more powerful transom mounted outboard engine or even an inboard engine.
Although the common term, Rubber Duck is used, the entire boat is not just made out of rubber. Inflatable boats may have rubber floors, either plain or inflatable, or they may include steel wood or aluminium sheets of rigidity. The flexible tubes that the inflatable boat is made of are a rubberized synthetic sheet of Hypalon or PVC, which provide light weight to secure buoyancy. The tubes of the rubber dinghy are often constructed in separate sections in order to secure a valve on each tube to add or remove air in order to reduce the risk of a puncture.
The demands for inflatable boats are growing increasingly, mainly for white water rafting and kayaking, as well as in river, lake and ocean touring. It is an exhilarating and exciting experience to be on board a rubber duck, shooting across the ocean.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the material of an Inflatable boat, there is the risk of a puncture or a tear from nature’s gruelling elements – both sun and water. People often make the mistake of replacing the boat, instead of just patching it back up.
