Increased Railroad Clearance - Table Bridge solution ???

We have two downtown streets that overpass a single track railroad. The existing structures are badly deteriorated and need to be replaced. The railroad requires about 30" of increased vertical clearance to accommodate double stack trains. The dilemma is that the track cannot be lowered to gain clearance and raising the overpass will have a severe adverse impact on historic building in an historic downtown. Could table bridges be a solution here? I am merely the Town Manager and not an engineer ... I believe the situation demands an innovative solution. A bridge that could lift just a few feet to allow train passage seems like it could be a brilliant solution. I will welcome comments.
