The official date of the "fall" of the Roman empire is 4 September 476, when the last emperor Romulus Augustus, was deposed. However, the decline of the Roman empire took place over a long period of time.

Well, it depends.

Many historians believe that the decline took place in the 180, after the death of Marcus Aurelius and the advent of Commodus.
Many others consider the 395 the turning point for the Roman empire, in corrispondence of the death of Theodosius and the division of the empire.
But also the 378 is a date to remember: the terrible battle of Hadrianople, in which emperor Valente perished along with the two third of eastern roman soldiers. This originated the permanent entrance of Goths and Huns inside the empire
