I'm interested in learning Greek on my own and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Are there certain forms of Greek that are recommended? Any particular texts that are extremely helpful? Any help or insight at all would be greatly appreciated!

I learned some Greek on my own, so I can help you with some of the basics. The first step is to learn the Greek script and the equivalent pronunciations. Next you'll need a Greek/English dictionary, and finally I found the Berlitz Greek book with tape or CD helpful to learn basic language phrases. I also found several Greek pen-pals to help me learn more.

I was a home care provider for a Greek man whose family came to visit and knew no English. Through my basic knowledge, I was able to communicate with them. The only thing the wife could say was "breakfast" (which she pronounced "Break-fast" as opposed to our "brekfest" pronunciation.)

Anyway, for further education, I would try to contact your nearest Greek Orthodox Church to find someone to tutor you, or, if you're lucky, a local university who happens to teach modern Greek. Good luck!
