Flute

I'm a newbie flautist in training and I have lots of questions I know are probably repetitive, but I'll ask anyways. I hope someone will be kind and answer!! Tuning a flute? My flute's back keys won't change the sound of the note, do they need to be tuned? What kind of tuner do I need to have for a flute.

I read in my book there are 40 notes from a flute, so they cover 5 octaves? There are 7 notes in each octave with the 8th note being in the next octave, or is it 8 notes in each octave? The flute is a beautiful sounding instrument and I really want to play, so if anyone can give an answer to any of my questions, it will be greatly appreciated.
