I would like to know the distance that the fence ran from the W.A border to Qld? and was it origionaly built along the existing pastoral leases? Also the distance he patroled across the Great Victoria Desert to Igomar on the Stuart Highway.
I was told by Bill Stretton (D'ceased)who patroled the fence from Commonwealth Hill corner of the W.A and S.A Border to
Igomar, south of Coober Pedy from 1946 - to 1973 ? that it was a distance of some 5400 klm. He was a wonderful character who origionally patroled the fence using camles for transport - then in the mid 50,s by a shortwheel based Landrover. I know many of the stories of the Dog fence, we became good friends while I lived in Coober Pedy from 1961 to 1982 Bill was a maticulous keeper of records, but unfortunately: I have been told that his diaries were burned when he died in the mid 1980's. What a waste of history probably never again to be written.
