I was told by a lady in Savannah, Georgia, that the opening scene in the movie, "Cool Hand Luke" in which Paul Newman cuts the heads off of parking meters, was based on the true story of her first husband, Mr. Halt, who was arrested in downtown Savannah for doing the same thing to get out of the Army. She says that the story of Mr. Halt was on the front page of the Svaannah paper, and that people from hollywood saw the story and contacted her and paid her and her husband a good sum of money for the rights to use the stroy in the upcomning movie in 1967. Could this indeed be a true story?
