I was recently up to Kennedy meadows and talked to one of the workers about the bucks he had seen this year from hunters. He had a comment that struck me as odd. he said that the racks seemed much smaller this year than normal. I witnessed this when seeing a few. the points were all there but the size of the antlers seems small. Now we have had a lot of rain this past year but it has been cooler than normal. how could this effect the size of antlers? I something they feed on not growing well or is it just the temp.? Just wondering? i do not hunt, just interested in the natural world and how it changes from year to year

The smaller racks with adequate points are usually genetically adequate but younger bucks. Some areas are hunted harder and by less choosy sportsmen. They will take any legal buck, rather than waiting for a mature buck to allow the younger bucks a year or two to grow thos big racks. I applaud the hunter that passes on the youngsters and takes the mature buck even if it risks not getting his animal that particular year.
