I was on the Slate Islands from July 5 through July 10 of this year, and I heard at least 2 wolves howling during the night each night. I also observed a bull caribou being spooked out of the woods towards our campsite on one occasion for no apparent reason other than perhaps a predator. I also have pictures of this bull with scars on its flank which look like the result of a predator attack. The Ontario Ministry of Natural resources says there are no wolves on the islands, but there obviously are. A local person who I will not name said that the ministry brought the wolves there some time ago, perhaps in the last 2 years as an experiment. The last time wolves made it to the islands in the early 1990's they cut through the population like a hot knife through butter. If this is allowed pretty soon there will be no caribou or wolves on the islands.
