I was a member of Mobile Construction Battalion (MCB) (Special), the construction arm of Task Force 4 the overall Naval Command during Operation Deep Freeze I. We Seabees arrived on the Ice in mid December of 1955 when there was nothing but ice. We lived in tents, ate from field galleys, went without showers and worked 12 to 14 hours a day for several months. We built McMurdo Station, then known as Williams Air Operating Facility (Williams AirOpFac) Little America V, Byrd Station and the first South Pole Station. We had no contact such as mail, radio, phones, TV, etc. with the rest of the world for eight months. We had no fresh food, it was all canned frozen or powdered. We left the Ice In mid January 1957. My question is, why has so little been written about that particular time?

I too am wishing more was written. It sounds like you might have relieved my father-in-laws expedition from 1953. I think that it would be great if the two of you could get in contact with each other. I know that he'd love to share experiences with someone who can relate to what it was like. I'll talk to him today and get his e-mail. Mine is lusterjd@yahoo.com, I too would like to discuss this further. I am a retired Navy Chief.
