I understand that git is supposed to be a fast VCS but We are seeing slow performance while working with git commands on our servers.

Git status command itself takes like >4 mins to show the output. so with git commit etc

Any advise on what the problem could be and how to improve this? It is suspected that since the storage is accessed over NFS, that could be the cause of delay. Could this be true?
