I understand that Catherine Willis Gray Murat, a g-g-g-g-grand aunt, returned to Florida from France to help her slaves establish themselves when they were freed under the Emancipation Proclamation. Can you tell me more about this?

I don't know if that was the main reason Catherine returned from France. She was offered a Chateau and a place at the court of Napoleon III, as Princess Murat. The largest reason Princess Murat declined the place in France was her work with the newly formed Mount Vernon Ladies Association, the first presrvation group of its' kind. Catherine, as a grand niece of George Washington, was the Associations' representative from Florida. This took up much of Catherines' time after her return. A number of her slaves stayed with her after the Emancipation, so I would imagine she cared for them and tried finding them good situations for making a living. I think Catherine was a generous, compassionate person. It is evident in her love for the kooky, eccentric Murat. She put up with alot . She loved deeply.
