Tuning peg

I took my cello to a local music store and had geared tuning pegs, Perfection Pegs, installed. It sounded great, and with the promise of easy tuning, what could go wrong? I put it in the hard case and waited for my first cello lesson (about two days). It's like the strings spread out on the peg and you can't push in enough to engage the gear in the tuning pegs. I really started to worry when my cello instructor couldn't figure out how to tune it, so my first lesson was a disaster. But when I got home, I decided to loosen each peg and completely rewind each string. Voila - each peg held it's note, but I have to do this each time I want to play. I'm not against learning my instrument inside and out, but I have to wonder if I've made a mistake. Does anyone else have this problem?
