I thought I read that Alexander the Great rode his horse up the stairs of the Bell Tower in the Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy. I have some friends travelling there and I was going to tell them this astounding fact, but I want to make sure I am correct. If I remember right, I read this information in Venice as I was about to ascend the stairs myself. Thank you!

That would not be true. No tower was built on the bell-tower site for well over 1,000 years after Alexander died.

I'm not even sure if Alexander set foot in Italy at all. In his time, the Roman Republic would have been in existence. I know his successors and descendants had dealings with them, but I don't believe he did. The goal of Macedonia's rulers at that time were to stabilize themselves internally, protect their borders against other aggressive Greek powers, and prepare for war against the Persian Empire.
