I saw a reference to a poem called "Israel" in a book from 1868 with no reference to the author. John Hay's poem "Israel" was part of the book "Pike County Ballads and Other Poems" which was published in 1871. Could it be that this particular poem had already been published before, in 1868 or earlier?
