Citroën Traction Avant

I read many years ago about an ordinary everyday Frenchman who owned a Citroen Traction Avant. In the years before World War 2, he drove alternatively north or south from his village or town that was situated in central France and in doing so clocked up a huge mileage (or kilometreage?). By doing this, and without being associated with the Citroen company, he proved that the car's innovative design was sound. That's the story as I remember it but it may be wrong in some of the details. Can anyone tell me the whole story?
