Refried beans

I love refried beans. We open a can and have them, we make home made some times, ussually with black beans, and I have them often in restrants. The best beans I ever have though come in a tv dinner, and I have had assorted brands of tv dinner, the beans are always great. The only thing I can identify as different about them is the color, they are grey and they seldom have any bean material left. They are always mush that would go through a strainer. Does anyone know how these beans are made?
