Muzzle-loading rifles

I just traded for what I think is a 60's or 70's .45 caliber Kentucky rifle. It has no writing or markings of any kind on it, but it seems to be well made with beautiful stock & quality workmanship. I haven't shot it yet. The trouble is, it seems to have a 1 in 12 twist rate rifling. I'm not that experianced in black powder shooting (yet), but I've been doing some reading, and this seems to be way off when it comes to twist. Is there a good reason someone would do this? & is there any type of projectile that would give good performance with this type of rifling ? Thanks, shootist1
