Great white shark

I heard about a great white shark named Tom Johnson, whom scientists have been tracking since 1987. He's the oldest and longest-tracked shark that scientists have ever followed. Looking at footage and digital models of him, I noticed that he does not have claspers. He used to according to some older footage, but he does not anymore. Does anyone know if male sharks lose their claspers as they age? Or is his situation just unique?
