High Middle Ages

I have recently returned from a long trip taking me from Central Asia through Georgia and Turkey. What began to intrigue me was the presence of impressive buildings and ruins dating from 1000-1300. I was also visiting shrines of many 'sufis'/'men of wisdom' in the region who lived in the region and whose ideas are still influential today. Coming towards Europe (visiting Orthodox churches as well as the House of Mary in Ephesus, Turkey, I also became increasingly aware of how the Virgin Mary has been venerated from that period).
When you read about the 'High Middle Ages', the context of that history is usually solely European and from a Eurocentric perspective. What was happening elsewhere in the world at that time? Many societies were more 'advanced' than Europe at the beginning of that period - is it not very possible that many 'European' developments owed their origin to developments elsewhere? It was a 'warm period' climatically, but not just in Europe.
I intend to investigate this further but would be grateful for any ideas (by the way, I did study History at uni and have some idea of the 12Century Renaissance and other happenings and personalities of the Middle Ages in Europe)
