Laguiole knife

I have recently purchased an old carbon steel blade Laguiole knife. It has an old style crossbow emblem and Laguicle (yes that is definitely a C not an O)pressed in to the blade. The tang is marked G David. It does not have the bee\fly on the back nor is it worked along the spine. It does have the cross pins on the scale, the horn handle has shrunk at the narrow end exposing the brass liner on both sides. Can anyone give me some background on this very plain but very old knife? Thank you Graeme

Hi, I have a knife exactly the same as the one you describe, have you found out anything more about it? Wayne

Hi, Wayne the only info I have to date is regarding the name G David who took over the Forge de Laguiole off the inventor of the Laguiole knife Jean Pierre Calmel some time in the late 1800's. The family is still making them, G Arbelette David (the spelling is not correct I'm sure)is the current owner I think. The Forge de Laguiole is one of only two forges that operate in Laguiole who produce knives for export. I do have doubts as to whether the knife is genuine since there are many forgeries and with the spelling of Laguiole being Laguiclf on the blade it does arouse suspicion. Other than that I will continue look and I will update this thread as new info comes to light I trust you will do the same. Graeme
