Battle of Cold Harbor

I have come upon a Civil War era Bible apparently owned by a Lieutenant S. (Samuel?) Hammer. An inscription on the flyleaf says that he fell mortally wounded on June 3, 1864, and died June 15 in Richmond Va. June 3 1864 was part of the Cold Harbor campaign. I do not know if he was a Union or Confederate officer but he was probably from the south. The Bible was printed in 1849/50 and reportedly has blood from Lieutenant Hammer's wounds on it. I am trying to find out more about the man. Can anyone steer me to an exhaustive resource for Civil War Casualties, officer lists, etc.?

If so thanks a bunch!!!
