Colt Cobra .38 Special revolver

I have a colt cobra .38 that my dad purchased in 1967 during the riots in Detroit. I don't think there has been more than 100 rounds fired with this pistol and it is in very good shape has been well oiled and cleaned. Also the belt clip holder is with the weapon. I was wondering what I could get for this approximately, so I could barter on a different type weapon.

Thanks for any info that you can give me.

Colt's are the probably most collectable handguns made in the US. As I recall, the Cobra is a lightweight version of the Detective Special, the weapon I carried for 10 years as a US Treasury agent. There are several different models of the Detective Special, with changes made over time. There are at least two, if not more, versions of the Cobra. I have the model that was the next after your father purchased his, if it is the one in the picture. It is a newer model, probably making it worth less than yours.

I have bought and sold many guns but I would hate to give you a bad value for yours. I wouldn't take less than $300 for mine, and that is if I had to sell it. I paid $125 for this handgun new in 1972.

I suggest you get a copy of Fjedstaadt's (spelling wrong but close) Blue Book of Guns. This book will tell you how to determine the grade of your weapon and give a price range for it. I wish I could buy it from you now, but the gun laws enacted after President Kennedy was killed have all but stopped this sort of business.

I would be interested in what you find. I bought a colt agent 38 special in 1977 and never fired it. I might want to trade for a gun that I can carry easily in a purse.
