Peugeot 406

I have a Peugeot 406 TD 1996 and is sometimes difficult to start. It has new glow plugs, 2,500 miles ago and the glow plug relay has been replaced but still the condition exists. However, this morning it started first time. When it does eventually start and I travel say 7 miles then leave it for 4 hours it will start first time. Could it be the stop solenoid on the pump preventing a glow circuit being made although there is no run on when switching off. Also, the problem has steadily got worse...............not starting more often. Glow plugs are cold. I rule out the ignition barrel because of first time starting later that day. It can only be the the other electrical relays. There are no other issues with the car which I have had from new and at 168,000 miles on the same clutch! Any ideas please?

The car has 168,000 miles on the engine,.....Constant stop and start driving in a DIESEL engine , takes its toll on the INJECTOR pump, you should have it checked out for proper fuel pressure delivery at IDLE, and during the ENGINE WARM-UP cycle,...also, you should let the engine warm up PROPERLY, before driving,You need to drive it FOR LONGER PERIODS in the HOT or COLD weather,to get the engine fluids up to operating temperature,THEN SEE if the problem is still there, if it is,take the car to a PEUGEOT mechanic and have the fuel system checked out...AS for the GLOW PLUGS, LEAVE the ignition ON until the GLOW PLUG light goes off, then re-start the ignition switch until the GLOW PLUG LIGHT is on again,THEN try starting the car,if it starts on the second try, the GLOW PLUG CIRCUIT needs to be re-checked for worn or weak RELAY'S, or a BAD GLOW PLUG may be the culprit.

Thanks for that Edsel, it was very kind of you and is much appreciated. Just a little more information for you. When the car fails to cold start I have checked the glow plugs for warmth and they are cold. A subsequent ignition sequence also showed that the glow plugs were cold to touch. Usually. as you say, two ignition starts usually does the trick but this week it did take more than five attempts and it was only when I turned the key quickly then waited for the glow light to go out did the engine start. Like you I believe a weak relay is at fault but which one and further more where are they housed? This morning it started first time in the wet and subsequently whilst shopping. I went to Peugeot but received the usual diagnostic answer and also I was asked if the rev counter was operational during the starting cyle on the starter motor.......I never looked but will next time. Your view would be most welcome................

A good mechanic can sort out the Glow plug problems for you,................Diesel engines are generally excellent for long term reliability, but there are exceptions to every rule, some of them don't hold out like they should.............
