Ford Windsor engine

I have a 1972 351 windsor engine in my 66 mustang and have installed an HEI distributor in it, now I can not get the timing below 10 degrees and the advance timing is close to 40 degrees. I'm concerned about detanating a piston. any sugestions. Larry
