Microsoft Publisher

I have MS Publisher 2010. I'm either losing my mind or my memory. I was sure I was able to insert a counter on a form. I am starting a small business and for now I print my own forms, etc... The counter is handy when generating forms. I have a 3 part invoice filled out by hand. The big complication is that it is a three part form so I'll print 3 with the same number then increment the number and print 3 more with the same number, so on and so on. I can't find a way to do it in Publisher. I am pretty sure I can do it in Exel but it would be better if it was in Publsiher. I'm old enough to remember those big, clunk, expensive metal counting stamps. but would prefer to do in on the computer. Print quality is better, it is less messy and I reduce the chance of an error.
